Quick Thoughts: Art & Books…

The Art ForgerThe Art Forger by B.A. Shapiro so nicely tied together two things I love — a great story and great art. I took a lot of Art History and Museum Studies classes in college and would have gone on to get my Master’s degree if my A.H. professor in undergrad hadn’t been so terrifying. (So instead I took the books path…)

The book just reminded me that I really loved learning the history of great works and about the lives of the artists, but this also added that piece that my A.H. classes were missing: the lives of the collectors. They are a fascinating group of people.

One thing I wish I had done in college was take a painting class and reading this book made me want to take one even more. Maybe I’ll just start painting and see what happens…I’m sure it’s a great stress reliever, right? I mean, I have zero talent, but it could be fun.

I’ve always wondered what the interest is in stealing a masterpiece…what can you do with it? You can’t display it. You can’t share it. You can’t really even sell it. So what’s the point? But I guess it is pride. It’s knowing that you have something so beautiful that no one else owns.

Call Me, Maybe?

One of my Christmas presents this year was The Great American Pin-Up by Charles G Martignette & Louis K Meisel. As I read, I started wondering about why pin-up art was never mentioned in my modern art classes…at least not that I remembered…I’m sure it’s because it wasn’t “fine art” but some of the artists were incredibly talented. Reading the book was kind of like a class of one on the History of Pin-Ups.

Earlier today, my co-worker shared with me this fantastic post from Tor.com about science fiction takes on well-known works of art. They include some great re-workings in the post, Duchamp’s Nude Descending a Staircase with instead  with C3PO at the center. Many works the post included are re-worked for book cover art — which is an entirely different blog post because cover art is really stunning sometimes.

OH! Speaking of cover art…have you seen the TEDTalk about book cover art?

I won’t even get into the incredible art made WITH books, but I do curate a couple of Pinterest boards filled with Bookish Art and Bookish Crafts at work (I seriously have THE BEST job).

So those are my random thoughts for today…
